Features: Windows 8.1 in detail

The familiar made better

The desktop you're used to - with its familiar folders and icons - is still here. And not just still here, it's actually better than before, with a new task manager and streamlined file management. And you can always get to your desktop - and back to your Start screen again - with a tap or click.

Use them the way you always have. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other programs you count on work the way you're used to. Use a mouse and keyboard and organize your stuff in folders on the desktop.

Windows Defender and Windows SmartScreen can help guard your PC against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software in real time. Family Safety gives your kids some independence while still keeping tabs on them.

    Mouse and keyboard

You can use a mouse and keyboard to work on your Windows desktop the way you always have. And things you do with touch, like using apps from the Windows  Store and getting around on your Start screen, can also be done with a mouse and keyboard.

Make it yours

    Start Screen

Photos, news from friends, your favorite apps and sites - put what's most important to you on your Start screen. Choose your colors and move stuff around until it's just the way you like it.

Your favorite apps, sites, and people: Make each one a tile you can resize, move around, and organize the way you want. Some tiles animate with the latest information so you see live updates at a glance. Get status updates, weather forecasts, and Tweets as soon as you sign in.

    Personal lock screen

Your lock screen displays a slide show of your favorite photos. Plus, you can answer Skype calls, and take photos before you even unlock your PC.

    Picture Password

Instead of typing a password, you can unlock your PC by drawing shapes on a picture with your finger or mouse. Three taps or clicks on your dog's nose? Tracing the smile of your toddler? The choice is yours.

Search once, go anywhere

Bing smart search gives you results from your PC, your apps, and the web. Results are in a clean, graphic view so you can quickly get to what you're looking for. (Certain features unavailable in some regions.)

See More, do More

Windows  8.1 lets you work the way you want, and flow smoothly from one thing to another. Pull up a Wikipedia article during a chat with a friend to settle a debate. Play a music video while polishing your resume. Depending on the size of your screen, you can see up to four apps at once.

YourWindows, everywhere

It goes where you go.

Use your Microsoft account to sign in to any of your devices running Windows  8.1, and you'll see the same layout, apps, and settings. Signing in with your Microsoft Account (which is simply an email address and password of your choice) also gives you access to a world of apps from the Windows Store, and lets you save, view, and edit your documents and photos online with SkyDrive.

Your files are always with you

SkyDrive is free online storage that's built intoWindows  8.1. Save documents, photos, and other files toSkyDrive automatically, and get to them anytime, from any of your PCs or devices. And you can useSkyDrive to protect your files if something happens to your PC.

Extra Details

System Requirements

If you want to run Windows  8.1 on your PC, here's what it takes:

  • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2

  • RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)

  • Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

  • Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX  9 graphics device with WDDM driver

Additional requirements to use certain features:

  • To use touch, you need a tablet or a monitor that supports multitouch

If you have touch input hardware that isn't specifically designed for Windows  8.1, but displays the "Designed for Windows" logo for Windows  7, you'll experience touch responsiveness at least as good as it was on Windows  7. Because touch features of Windows  8.1 require a higher degree of responsiveness and precision, touch PCs that were designed for Windows  8.1 provide a much better experience typing on the touch keyboard and using certain features than those that were designed for Windows  7. For example, touchscreens that support fewer than five simultaneous touch points don't work with certain features and apps that are part of Windows  8.1.

  • To access the Windows Store and to download, run, and snap apps, you need an active Internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768

  • Microsoft account required for some features

  • Internet access (ISP fees might apply)

  • Secure boot requires firmware that supports UEFI v2.3.1 Errata B and has the Microsoft Windows Certification Authority in the UEFI signature database

  • Some games and programs might require a graphics card compatible with DirectX 10 or higher for optimal performance

  • Watching DVDs requires separate playback software

Windows  8.1  Pro don't come with DVD movie playback capability. If you're running Windows  8.1, you can search for a DVD player app in the Windows Store. If you have Windows  8.1  Pro, you can also buy the Windows  8.1 Media Center Pack that includes DVD playback.

  • Windows Media Center license sold separately

  • Miracast requires a display adapter which supports Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) 1.3, and a Wi-Fi adapter that supports Wi-Fi Direct

  • Wi-Fi Direct Printing requires a Wi-Fi adapter that supports Wi-Fi Direct and a device that supports Wi-Fi Direct Printing

  • To install a 64-bit OS on a 64-bit PC, your processor needs to support CMPXCHG16b, PrefetchW, and LAHF/SAHF

  • InstantGo works only with computers designed for Connected Standby
